Introduction
Sustainability involves making progress in the areas of environment, economy, and equity together. This page focuses on the economy component of sustainability. Meeting the District’s sustainability goals requires a robust local green economy. This means empowering businesses and residents to transition to low-carbon, resource-efficient systems. Creating and supporting green workforce opportunities is critical for building out such an economy and allowing District residents to learn the skills and training to excel. By transitioning to a green economy, we can uplift unemployed and underemployed residents with desirable, quality jobs that also improve the environment.
DC’s Economy Targets
The District has key economic objectives that are measurable and have specific deadlines, known as targets. They were established through plans and/or legislation.
- Create 35,000 new jobs in high-growth target sectors by 2028
- Increase the share of minority-owned employer businesses to 33% of all employer businesses by 2028
- Increase economic prosperity in DC by lifting the median household income of Black residents by $25,000 by 2028
Initiative Spotlight: Green Zone Environmental Program
The Green Zone Environmental Program is part of the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program and focuses on engaging young residents from historically marginalized communities in environmental education, green career development, and community service projects. The program provides participants with an entry point into the green workforce and helps prepare the next generation of environmental professionals.
